Fresh Tracks

Challenge

In late 2015, the Obama Administration issued a call for bold new programs that would use the outdoors to broaden horizons for diverse young Americans facing persistent opportunity gaps. Although there was no LBC Action yet, the people, values, and capabilities that would come to define LBC Action were ready to answer that call. The idea: bring aspiring leaders from urban and indigenous communities together for a shared experience blending civic engagement, cultural-sharing, and outdoor exploration.

Action

Over the next four years, the team that would become LBC Action built partnerships across nonprofit, business, and government sectors, designed a program model, and successfully placed Fresh Tracks at the Aspen Institute, where it has scaled.

Impact

Eight years later since its inception, Fresh Tracks is now partnering with the Annie E. Casey Foundation to support a nationwide cadre of youth researchers who are collecting and highlighting data on wellbeing in their communities through the Youth and Young Wellbeing Project. In 2023, the project published a report (Youth and Young Adult Wellbeing) that defined seven key intersecting areas of wellbeing within their own culture and tradition and produced recommendations for promoting well-being among youth and young adults within their same cultural group. Most recently, Fresh Tracks leaders participated in a March 2024 White House Youth Policy Summit: Cultivating Possibilities.
